Kilimanjaro Initiative (KI) has been organizing annual climbs on Mt Kilimanjaro since 2006. Every year, KI selects 10 youth from disenfranchised communities in Kenya, Tanzania and the USA. After a 10-day leadership and training course in the Maasai plains, the youth climb to the summit of Africa with representatives from the private and public sectors. After the climb, youth receive continued mentorship and scholarships.
The program supports a group of women in Kibera who have suffered from abuse. Certified counsellors provide mental health support to the group. Moreover, KI provided seed money for the group to develop and grow its own income generating project. The women make jewelry, including messages that promote self-belief and resilience. Group members also talk about mental health issues in their community.
In 2018, KI initiated and now oversees the Africa Golf Program, a non-profit organization that gives youth in Kibera access to golf. In partnership with the First Tee of Metropolitan New York, the program aims to create champions not only on the golf course, but more importantly within communities. In partnership with the First Tee of Metropolitan New York, the program aims to create champions not only on the golf course, but more importantly within communities. The program includes 30 young women and men, who train on a weekly basis and frequently participate in tournaments.
